Safety Switch Keeps Tripping in Sydney
A safety switch (RCD) that repeatedly cuts power is detecting current leakage and protecting people from electric shock. The cause may be one appliance, moisture, damaged wiring or a fault that needs testing—not a switch to keep resetting.
What might be happening
Possible causes of safety switch keeps tripping
Common causes include a failing appliance, water entering an outdoor fitting, deteriorated insulation, a damaged lead or a fault on one circuit. If it trips when a particular appliance is used, that is a useful clue, but it does not prove the appliance is the only problem.
What you can safely do
If there is no smoke, heat, water or visible damage, stop using appliances that were operating when the switch tripped. You may unplug an appliance only if the plug and area are dry and undamaged. Do not remove the switchboard cover or repeatedly reset the safety switch.
